South Bay School District will hold our first online Listening Session on November 9, 2021, from 6-8 PM The intention is to create an opportunity for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and People of Color) students and families to speak openly about their experiences at Pine Hill and South Bay. AND to share insights with the current school administration & faculty about lived experiences and how to improve equity efforts at Pine Hill and South Bay. Spanish translation will be provided. Please know this event is for BIPOC community members only (unless a BIPOC student’s family includes a white member) and specific listening audiences (e.g., school board members, administrators, faculty, and staff). The Listen Session will be facilitated by Sharrone Blanck, Humboldt County Office of Education Learning Specialist – Equity and Inclusion, and Eureka, NAACP, President. NOTE: The intention is to create space to explore topics alongside people who share identities and experiences. One of the most critical aspects of doing race-based affinity groups is to create a space that centers the needs and comfort of people of color – which seldom happens in mixed-race groups. Feedback from Listening Sessions in other local high school districts showed that students and community members of color found this forum helpful and healing. The South Bay School District looks forward to sharing our Listening Session takeaways at school board meetings and faculty meetings. Future listening sessions will be open to different audiences so our community may continue growing and learning about ways to support all individuals. Dates, Times, and Links for future Listening Sessions are TBD. LINK WILL BE LIVE ON THE NIGHT OF THE EVENT. Please contact Gary Storts, Superintendent, if you have any questions.

Good morning Pine Hill and South Bay families. After careful review of the 3rd Trimester survey data results and conversations with our teachers, the 3rd Trimester bell schedule will remain unchanged for both in-person and distance learners. Subtle programmatic adjustments include: 1. decreasing the physical space between students from 6 feet to 4 feet - increasing in-person learning opportunities for more student scholars, and 2. providing Special Day Class students the ability to join one other stable group - allowing regular day classroom access. If you would like to change your child's current learning plan, please contact your school as soon as possible. Any classroom adjustments will be parent-initiated and begin on March 29. If you completed the survey, you're all set, and no additional action is needed. In the coming weeks, the District will be coordinating a free teacher-led Summer Learning Program and developing a 2021-22 school schedule that provides the maximum number of students on campus for the entire school day - including EXPLORE - for the South Bay School Board's consideration. As always, please feel free to contact me at your convenience at either (707) 267-9174 or gstorts@southbayusd.org. My Very Best, Gary Storts Superintendent, South Bay Union Elementary School District

Crisis Learning: March 2020—March 2021 By Gary Storts, Superintendent March 16, 2021, will mark one-year since CA Governor Gavin Newsom declared a COVID-19 State of Emergency. Every segment of society has been forever changed. At best, this past year has been trying, and at worst, this past year has been devastating. Now, as more adults are getting vaccinated and case counts are declining, the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel is beginning to get a little brighter. As a superintendent, my responsibilities continue to be listening to our families and then carrying out the South Bay School Board's directions. On February, 25, 2021, the board directed me to work with our exceptional principals and dedicated teachers’ association to accomplish the following: (1) bring more students back to in-person learning and for a more extended time (2) continue to follow the CDPH Safety Guidelines (3) provide intervention services as practicable, and (4) continue to provide a distance learning option for families. This direction will allow our dedicated staff to use the final one-third of our school year as impactfully as possible. Educators and parents alike worry about both the short-term and long-term impacts of the past year of crisis learning (see page 5). In the short-term, the school board's direction will allow school sites to address substantial attendance concerns. Currently, more than one in every three students has missed significant learning opportunities this year, with distance learning contributing to almost 90% of chronic absenteeism. Crisis learning has also impacted the most foundational of all academic skills - READING. The school board's direction to safely return more students to the classrooms will address this crucial academic indicator of future school success. An additional short-term benefit will include the ability to offer families in-person learning in the morning, followed by EXPLORE in the afternoon. Select teachers and specialists would also hold targeted social-emotional and academic supports in the afternoon hours to address crisis learning impacts. As you could imagine, a school district has many moving parts. From the staffing schedule to the instructional schedule, implementing a programmatic shift takes the careful coordination of many departments and groups. Thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility as we continue to bend but not break.

Good afternoon Pine Hill and South Bay Stakeholders. I hope this correspondence finds you and yours well. As we continue to navigate crisis learning, March 15, 2021, marks the start of the 3rd Trimester - one year since COVID-19 impacted our campuses, straining structure and routine and affecting our ability to laugh and learn as a school community. With the large majority of staff having received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, last night, the South Bay Governing Board provided direction to maximize the amount of on-campus, in-person learning we can offer our students in Trimester 3. The Board provided additional direction to maintain the safety mitigation measures outlined in the CDPH School Reopening Guidance and to continue offering our families the option of distance learning. Next week, I look forward to beginning these conversations with the South Bay Teachers' Association (SBTA) and the California Schools Employees' Association, Elk River Chapter 766. In the coming weeks, please also look for additional outdoor school sports/athletics opportunities. Lastly, the District is planning on providing a robust summer learning program for our students. Ran in unison with the EXPLORE Summer Program, a teacher-led Summer School program is in the planning stages. As a result, we are rescheduling the March Parent-Teacher Conferences for late May/early June, when teachers will have more information about their students' strengths and areas for growth. Later in the year, we will also be able to provide greater detail about our summer learning opportunities. If you have any immediate questions or concerns about your child, please reach out to your child's teacher or school principal. As a community, I much appreciate your patience and flexibility. Please know that every employee on the Pine Hill and South Bay campuses work tirelessly to provide the best learning environment possible. As a parent and superintendent, I am inspired by my colleagues and proud to part of such a loving and caring community. My Very Best, Gary Storts, Superintendent

Good morning Pine Hill and South Bay Families. We are excited to welcome students back to campus on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. All of the safety precautions implemented in October and November will continue on our campuses. Students must wear face coverings, stay 6 feet physically distant from one another, wash their hands frequently, stay in a single cohort of students, and complete a self-certification symptom check before being allowed on-campus. In addition to the precautionary measures implemented in October and November, in response to the growing state and local COVID-19 positivity counts, and in unison with requests from CSEA, Elk River 766, and our Parent Teachers Student Association (PTSA), students and staff must follow the Travel Advisory issued by the California Department of Public Health on January 6, 2021. In a recent email distributed to local district superintendents regarding Humboldt County's Travel Advisory, Deputy Public Health Officer, Teresa Frankovich wrote, "At this time, HCPH is still recommending 14 days for quarantine for individuals in school settings and our guidance documents still use this number." With both state-level and county-level travel advisories in mind, and with the aim to keep our campuses open to in-person learning for the remainder of the year, all students and staff need to refrain from all "non-essential" travel, defined as…travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature. Further, should a student or staff member travel for a non-essential reason, they will be required to contact their site principal for distance learning details and self-quarantine for 14 days. A travel-related question has been to your daily text or email self-certification survey. I am incredibly grateful for the dedication demonstrated by our support staff, teaches, and principals. Our commitment to students and families is to do everything possible to ensure we can provide on-campus, in-person learning to all families who want it. A growing body of evidence shows that if we follow our public health officials' recommendations, we can continue to operate schools in a safe and educationally rewarding manner. Thank you in advance for your efforts to help keep our campus doors open. My Very Best, Gary Storts Superintendent South Bay Union Elementary School District

Greetings South Bay District Families. The school board’s decision to go back to distance learning after the Thanksgiving break has generated a lot of questions, so we’d like to clarify expectations and answer questions many of you have. Trimester 2 will begin on Nov. 30th after the Thanksgiving break. Morning and afternoon cohorts will continue as planned, but will all be distance learning. If your student was going to move cohorts, they will continue to move to their new cohort as planned. If you have any questions about which cohort your student is in please contact either the Pine Hill (443-4596) or South Bay (443-4828) offices. All students will be required to quarantine for the first two weeks after Thanksgiving Break. On the third week after Thanksgiving break, the week before winter break, our SDC, speech, and other students that receive specialized services on site could be allowed back on campus, provided that they pass the Qualtrics screening. Site principals will be working closely with service providers to schedule opportunities for on campus supports for those students. Teachers are currently working on rolling out a new online learning platform called Edmentum. This program will provide students a more individualized learning experience that will be based on their STAR Reading and STAR Math assessments, helping to fill gaps in their learning and push them to excel academically. Curriculum distribution will remain on Mondays for Pine Hill and Fridays for South Bay. Your student’s teacher will let you know if there is a packet waiting for your student. Food distribution can be picked up at South Bay School on Fridays from 11-1pm for any and all students within the district. This will be a five day food distribution with breakfast and lunch for each child. The Afterschool program will continue in a distance learning model via Zoom, with support for homework help and online activities to help students maintain their social connections with peers. Pine Hill Explore will be from 3:00-4:00 and South Bay will be from 3:15-4:15. We know this time is difficult for all families and we appreciate the support of your students and the school. Together we can help one another stay safe and connected. The Family Resource Center is available to all families in the district. Contact Cassi Le-Hue (445-5933) our FRC Coordinator,if your family has a need during this time. Also, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Grimmett (443-4596 ext 11) or Mrs. Becksted (267-9165) if you have any questions or need additional information.

November 19, 2020 Dear Pine Hill and South Bay Families, Last night, the South Bay Union Elementary School District's Governing Board of Trustees voted – with the strong recommendation from Humboldt County Public Health Officer, Dr. Teresa Frankovich – to move all students to distance learning following the Thanksgiving Break. Dr. Frankovich clarified her recommendation via email stating, "Although schools have done a remarkable job of implementing preventative measures to promote safety in on-site education, we anticipate a marked increase in local infections due to travel and gatherings occurring around Thanksgiving. This would threaten rapid identification and containment of cases, leading to increased transmission in the school setting." When taking Dr. Frankovich's strong recommendation into account, and continued concern for expected travel and gatherings during Christmas and New Years' Eve, after the Thanksgiving Break, all students will be placed in distance learning with the option of returning to on-campus, in-person learning on January 19, 2020. The District's recommendation and ultimate approval from the South Bay Governing Board did not come without acknowledging the impacts this decision places on students, families, and staff. The many stresses this virus has caused each of our families and too numerous to count. Want I can promise are my commitments to bolster our distance-learning efforts. As a staff, we pride ourselves on our ability to improve continuously. You can expect enhancements to our distance-learning efforts, including more personalized learning opportunities with more frequent student check-ins to maintain positive student-teacher relationships. The District will also work to provide on-campus access to specialized services. Please look for more detailed communication from your school's principal very soon. My hope, not only as a superintendent but also as a father of a kindergartner and fifth-grader, is that this is the last time we are forced into distance learning. That said, our ability to safely keep our campus doors open depends on our entire community's preventative efforts. Everyone needs to follow the lead of Humboldt's schools by (1) wearing a face-covering, (2) providing 6ft of physical distance, (3) practicing great hand and respiratory hygiene, and (4) staying home if you are feeling sick. If we do these four simple measures when we return to campus in mid-January, I believe we can remain in-person for the remainder of the school year. And our efforts start with the holidays. I urge all our Pine Hill and South Bay stakeholders to follow the Travel and Private Gathering Guidance. Thank you all in advance for doing your part to ensure when we return to on-campus, in-person laughing and learning on January 19, 2021, we can do so through the end of the school year. We have all worked so hard to be able to offer our families the option of on-campus, in-person learning. With the steady increase in positive COVID-19 cases in Humboldt County, you can help Pine Hill and South Bay keep our campus doors open by following the CDPH Guidance for Private Gatherings. Thank you in advance for keeping your family, neighbors, and our greater school community safe and healthy.

October 13, 2020 TO: South Bay Union Elementary School District Families SUBJECT: In-Person, On-Campus Learning On March 13, 2020 – exactly seven months ago – was the last time students were on our campuses laughing and learning. Today, the South Bay campus welcomed students back into classrooms, and tomorrow, the Pine Hill campus will greet our youngest students as they begin the start of their in-person school year. The road to get here involved the coordination and creative problem solving of many dedicated professionals and educators – a list of names too long to write here. That said, I do feel it necessary to call our community attention to the extraordinary efforts of our school principals, Ms. Heather Becksted and Mr. Tim Grimmett, who without, in-person learning would not have been possible. I feel privileged to call them colleagues, and as a parent with a child at each site, I trust their leadership completely. THANK YOU, Heather, and Tim! Now as parents, the option to continue in-person, on-campus learning lies largely in our control. The following steps will greatly increase a prolonged and sustainable in-person learning opportunity: 1) If you are sick, stay home. I can’t say that too many times or loud enough. Every individual coming onto campus must complete a self-symptom screening to ensure the health and safety of our school community. 2) Face coverings are required. Please have multiple masks and wash them regularly. 3) Wash your hands often. Proper hand hygiene and avoiding touching your face is a simple and effective way to prevent infections. 4) Practice physical distancing. 6foot space, while masked is the gold standard. 5) Review and follow the CDPH Guidance for Private Gatherings. In general, the more people from different households a person interacts with at a gathering, the closer the physical interaction is, and the longer the interaction lasts, the higher the risk that a person with a COVID-19 infection, symptomatic or asymptomatic, may spread it to others. A few details from the guidance -- a. Consistent 3 Household Maximum b. Gather Outdoors c. Don’t Attend Gatherings If You Feel Sick or You Are in a High-Risk Group d. Practice Physical Distancing and Hand Hygiene at Gatherings e. Wear a Face Covering to Keep COVID-19 from Spreading f. Keep it Short (2 hours or less) g. Singing, Chanting, and Shouting Are Strongly Discouraged Together, we find ourselves in the middle of the most important public trust exercise of our lifetime and it is our collective social responsibility to not only look after the health and welfare of ourselves and our family, but our entire South Bay community. Together, by taking the COVID-19 guidance to heart, I’m confident we can keep our campus doors open and begin to create our new South Bay normal. My Very Best, Gary Storts, Superintendent

Parent Choice: Instructional Preference Survey Good afternoon Pine Hill and South Bay Families. Last night, the South Bay Governing Board voted 3-1 (yes: Carver, Noga, Quintrell / no: Coan) to grant parents and families the option of continuing with a distance learning instructional model or to choose a hybrid learning model. You will be receiving a survey this afternoon asking that you commit to an instructional model that best fits the needs of your family. Below, please find additional details that will help your choice. Distance Learning This model is a continuation of the distance learning experience we are currently using. Students will have a mix of live daily instruction from their teacher and independent remote work assigned by their teacher. For families choosing the distance learning model, targeted interventions and supports will be provided to students via Zoom. A family may request a transition from one learning model to another at any time. Based on classroom capacity, the transition would occur at the beginning of the trimester. For reference, the start of the second trimester begins on November 20, 2020. Hybrid Learning The hybrid learning model will combine in-person instruction with remote/distance learning. In the hybrid instructional model, students will be placed in either an A.M. or P.M. cohort where in-person learning would focus on social-emotional learning, reading, writing, and math. In the hybrid instructional model, when students are not learning on-campus and in-person, they will be learning remotely focusing on extension and enrichment learning opportunities or receiving targeted interventions and supports. On Mondays, ALL students will participate in distance learning. The first 45 minutes of their cohort will be done via Zoom, and the remainder of the day will be independent learning. At Pine Hill Elementary, the A.M. cohort would attend school from 8:15-11 A.M., and the PM cohort would attend from 12-2:45 P.M. At South Bay Elementary and Middle School, the A.M. cohort would attend school from 8:30 - 11:15 A.M., and the P.M. cohort will attend from 12:15-3 P.M. In order to provide parents with a choice between either distance learning or hybrid learning, your child may need to be placed into another classroom. Student movement between classrooms will be kept to a minimum. All students and staff (regardless of age) are required to wear facial coverings at all times (except when eating or drinking, or with a medical exemption) and are expected to maintain a minimum of six (6) feet of physical distance between themselves and others both indoors and outdoors. If wearing a face-shield, an attached drape that has the ability to be tucked into a shirt is required. Each cohort will have one 15-minute outdoor recess/snack time, with a limited number of classes on the playground at one time, and located in separate areas. Stable cohorts will be strictly monitored and composed of 12-14 students depending on class size, maintaining six (6) foot distancing inside the classroom. Students will remain with the same teacher and classroom aides. To minimize cohort mixing, music, art, PE, and library services will remain virtual. There will also be no assemblies or in-person classroom volunteers. The EXPLORE after school program will only be available to students in the P.M. cohort. Additionally, capacity in the EXPLORE program is limited and only available for students with the highest needs score (identified on registration packets) and as adequate staffing allows. Lunch and breakfast will not be served on campus. Meal bags will continue to be made available on Tuesdays from 8- 1 P.M. with distribution to occur on the South Bay campus. Bussing will only be made available in the A.M. cohort. Additionally, families requesting transportation will need to be able to document an identified hardship (i.e. no other way to get to school). Survey: Online or by Phone With the above information in mind, the South Bay Union Elementary School District will be surveying families online (thru Monday, 12 P.M.) or by phone Tuesday and Wednesday. Your timely response is greatly appreciated and allows time for our educators to prepare for the next leg of our 2020-21 educational journey. Good evening Pine Hill and South Bay, Today, the District met with the South Bay Teachers’ Association and the decision was made to postpone the start of the school year for both students and staff by one week. The first day of instruction for students will be August 31, 2020. It goes without saying that our 2020-21 back-to-school efforts are very different, and unlike anything educators have ever had to prepare for. The extra week of preparation will be used to organize the best possible distance learning instruction for our students – they deserve it! While the physical location of where our student will receive live daily instruction from their teachers may change, our goal will remain the same – to meet the learning needs of each and every student we are fortunate enough to teach. I give you my word that as educators, the South Bay Union Elementary School District will do everything within our control to meet this difficult moment by keeping learning a priority regardless of the instructional model. As always, please feel free to reach out to me at your convenience at either gstorts@southbayusd.org or 707-267-9174. Thank you in advance for your flexibility and adaptability during these challenging times. We will get through this together.
