Welcome Back

August 16, 2022

Dear SBUSD Families:

The new school year is just around the corner and we are excited about the opportunities to partner with you in your child’s education. A packet of information, including ways you can volunteer and forms to complete and send back with your child, will be coming home on the first day of school.

You will receive a text on Friday, August 19 at 5:00 PM informing you of the class in which your child is enrolled. Please note that no changes will be made to your child’s placement, except in exceptional circumstances. We appreciate your understanding.

School begins on Monday, August 22nd.  Students may arrive on campus no earlier than 7:45 AM. Free breakfast is served to all registered students. The first bell will ring at 8:20 AM with students ready to begin their school day at 8:25 AM when the tardy bell rings.  School is dismissed Tuesday-Friday at 3:10 PM at South Bay and 2:30 PM at Pine Hill. Monday dismissal is an early release at 12:50 PM at both schools so staff can participate in professional development.

We are asking all parents to help us ensure the regular, on-time attendance of their children at school.  That means being in the classroom at 8:25 AM. We monitor attendance closely because research has shown that regular attendance is vital for the success of children in school.  California law states that absences are excused only if the child is ill or if there is an excuse that meets the requirements of Education Code Section 48205.  Even excused absences that cause your child to miss significant amounts of school can cause your child to fall behind in class.

Education Code Section 48260 defines a truant as a pupil who has missed more than 30 minutes on three days without a valid excuse in one school year.  Our goal is to have all children present in school every day and on time in every class.  Our district’s policy is that we may require verification of absences due to illness or quarantine if your child has missed school for three consecutive days.  Please be aware that going “out of town” when school is in session with your child is an unexcused absence.

One of the most critical components of exceptional schools like South Bay and Pine Hill is the partnership between home and school.  Throughout the year, we will have the opportunity to develop our partnership in a wide variety of ways.  Families can join the PTSA, volunteer to help in the classroom, help in the library, attend or become a member at Site Council Meetings, or participate in one of the many events or activities that make our school a special place for our children to learn.

Please be sure to check the South Bay District website (southbayusd.org) for updated information and mark your calendar for our Back to School Nights: Pine Hill on August 31 and South Bay on September 1. Each evening, a BBQ and Meet & Greet will be from 5:00-6:00 and classroom information will be delivered by the teachers from 6:00-7:00. Local community groups will be available to present information and answer questions as well.

We look forward to another tremendous year with our incredible South Bay & Pine Hill community!
