April 22, 2021
Dear Pine Hill and South Bay families,
It is with deep heartfelt sadness that I share the following information:
On Thursday, April 21, 2021, two boys, ages 7 and 11, were victims of a senseless act of violence. Thankfully, both boys are now in stable condition. Our hearts and thoughts go out to these two children, as well as those who love and care for them. Please note that due to the children’s age, confidentiality will be kept in strict confidence.
We understand that this is a very sensitive issue that presents many complex emotions and feelings for our students. As such, we chose not to send an automatic message with this information out of concern that a child could pick up this news. We wanted parents to have the opportunity to discuss this information with their children firsthand, allowing for the sharing of personal family insight, perspectives, and beliefs.
Knowing that children find safety, comfort, and security in routines when students return from Spring Break, we will make every effort to maintain as normal a school environment as possible. That said, on Monday, April 26, the school day will begin at 8:45 AM to allow time for teachers and staff to meet and debrief. Please know we are working with our school psychologist and school counselor and neighboring school psychologists and school counselors to support our students, families, and staff as we navigate this genuinely traumatic event. Additionally, the Humboldt County Office of Education will be on-site to coordinate support efforts. If you or your child need anything in the days ahead, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at your earliest convenience.
